SIERRA VISTA — Much like predicted, it was out of the frying pan and into the fire for Buena at home against Sunnyside Friday night.

After losing big last week at home to Ironwood Ridge, which proved its mettle with a surprising 41-14 thumping of Salpointe Friday night, the Colts fell behind early again and could never recover.

But the Blue Devils adjusted their offense and scored on four of their six possessions in the second quarter en route to a 49-6 Southern Region win over the Colts.

The Blue Devils improved to 4-2 on the season. Buena fell to 1-5.

Sunnyside led 35-0 at the half, and on their second possession of the second half, Manny Aguilar plunged into the end zone and Hector Solis booted his sixth extra point of the game that gave the visiting team a 42-0 lead and put the running clock “mercy rule” into effect.

For Aguilar, it was his third touchdown of the night, having scored on a 1-yard plunge and a 27-yard run.

Vince Arroyos and backup quarterback Perry Shazier added two other rushing touchdowns, while starting quarterback Jesus Vega threw two scoring passes, a 20-yard toss to Alfred Leon and a 70-yard pass play to Marty Calles.

Vega finished the night 8-for-12 for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Solis booted all seven PAT’s.

For Buena, it was a long night plagued by heavy rains at times, a wet field and the inability to move the ball, both on the ground or through the air.

The Colts lone score came with 2:37 to play in the game.

Quarterback Billy Grant hit DeChe Milburn on a 33-yard pass play capping a nine-play, 74-yard drive. The PAT attempt failed.

Buena had 13 possessions in the game and went three-and-out on eight of the 13 possessions.

They lost the ball on downs twice, threw an interception and scored on their next to last possession.

Buena had only four first downs, the first one coming with 10:07 to play in the third quarter.

Sunnyside rushed for 285 yards, 151 of them from Aguilar. Vega had all 185 passing yards for the Blue Devils who wound up with 470 total yards.

Buena had 55 rushing yards and 54 passing yards for 109 total yards.

Grant carried the ball 17 times for 28 yards, while hitting on 5-for-16 passing attempts for 54 yards.

The Colt defense was led by Ronnell Quinones who was in on nine tackles. DeAndre Little was in on eight tackles and Patrick Ransford on seven tackles.

Elsewhere in region play, Ironwood Ridge defeated Salpointe Catholic, 41-14, Mountain View beat Casa Grande, 20-6 and Tucson High knocked off Rincon, 38-20.

Buena is on the road for their next two games, traveling to Marana Mountain View next week and Tucson High the following week.
